U.S. President Donald Trump. AP Yonhap News.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on the 29th (local time) that he would impose a 100% tariff on films produced outside the United States.
On the social media platform Truth Social that day, President Trump claimed, "Our film production business has been stolen from the United States by other countries, like taking candy from a baby."
He stated, "California, with its weak and incompetent governor, has been hit particularly hard. Therefore, to solve this old and never-ending problem, I will impose a 100% tariff on all films made outside the United States."
However, President Trump did not specify the criteria for what constitutes a "film made outside the United States" or provide a timeline for the implementation of these tariffs.
President Trump has previously expressed his position on imposing tariffs to protect the U.S. film industry.
Back in May, he stated on Truth Social that "the U.S. film industry is dying very quickly" and that he had directed the Department of Commerce and the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to impose a 100% tariff on all films produced abroad.
Meanwhile, his mention of the California governor is interpreted as an attempt to shift some of the responsibility for the difficulties facing the film industry onto Governor Gavin Newsom, a member of the Democratic Party.
He has consistently attacked Governor Newsom, who is considered a potential future presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, including blaming him for major wildfires in California.
