ADL Glossary Entry Claiming “TPUSA Linked to Various Right-Wing Extremists” Sparks Controversy

On Wednesday, FBI Director Kash Patel severed ties with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The ADL had established a relationship with the FBI during the tenure of former Director James Comey; however, the recent designation of Charlie Kirk's Turning Point USA (TPUSA) as an extremist organization led to the termination of this partnership.
Patel declared on X, "James Comey wrote 'love letters' to the ADL and embedded FBI agents within them. The ADL is an organization that carried out shameful operations to spy on Americans." He further stated, "Those days are over. This FBI will not join forces with political entities masquerading as oversight organizations."

According to Fox News, the ADL described Turning Point USA as being "linked to various right-wing extremists and has gained support from Islamophobes, alt-right activists, and segments of the white supremacist alt-right."
Comey had fostered a relationship with the ADL, an organization founded to combat antisemitism, in 2017. During an ADL National Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. that year, Comey expressed his affection for the group, stating that the FBI "loves" the ADL.
In his 2017 speech, Comey remarked, "We are not just educating ourselves, but we are working with the ADL to build bridges in the communities we serve."
He added, "For over 100 years, you have stood up for fairness and equality... And we are grateful for all of that. Not just as a law enforcement and national security agency, but as Americans and as human beings."
The ADL recently faced criticism from several Republicans, including Elon Musk, for including Turning Point USA in its "glossary of extremism and hate." Following the growing backlash, the ADL deleted the entire glossary on Tuesday.

In a post on X regarding the glossary, the ADL stated, "The ADL’s glossary of extremism, which has grown to over 1,000 entries over the years, has served as a source of advanced information on various topics. However, at the same time, an increasing number of entries in the glossary became outdated. There were also many entries that were intentionally misinterpreted and misused."
The organization further stated that by eliminating the glossary, they would be able to "explore new strategies and creative approaches to presenting data and research findings more effectively," adding, "This will allow us to focus on what we do best: fighting against antisemitism and hate in the most effective way possible."

Outrage over the glossary followed just weeks after Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was assassinated during a campus tour in Utah.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) pointed out on X, "I guess if they disagree with you, they will label you a 'hate group.'"

Elon Musk wrote on X, "The FBI followed the ADL’s definition of 'hate group.' That is why the FBI was investigating Charlie Kirk and Turning Point instead of his assassin." In a separate post, Musk labeled the ADL a "hate group."
