  • “We must ensure that the FBI and the Department of Justice have fully investigated the findings.”

According to a 2017 document released on Tuesday, the 7th, by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) of the Senate Judiciary Committee, the FBI obtained evidence during a political corruption investigation suggesting that former President Bill Clinton received illicit payments through kickbacks from a cooperating consultant.

Senator Grassley raised this issue during a hearing with Attorney General Pam Bondi, questioning whether the FBI and the Department of Justice had conducted a sufficient investigation into the findings.

The document, provided to Senator Grassley by a whistleblower, includes a case progress report written at the time by Tim Thibault, a supervisory special agent at the Washington Field Office.

The report contains details linking former President Clinton to a public corruption investigation involving then-Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe (D).

Agent Thibault recorded, "McAuliffe Case - Steven Sullivan, CFO of Teneo, was interviewed in New York City. The information provided appears to confirm that Teneo was used as a conduit for Doug Band to funnel money to the former U.S. President."

In his opening remarks that day, Senator Grassley stated, "Doug Band was an aide to President Clinton at the time and continued to work for him after he left office. Therefore, it is very clear that the reference to the 'U.S. President' refers to Bill Clinton."

He added, "This information confirms that there was an FBI investigation into McAuliffe and suggests that the Clintons and their associates were linked to this case."

He continued by asking, "Did the FBI dedicate resources to this case as they did against Trump and his associates? Or did they simply sweep everything under the rug?"

Before becoming governor in 2014, McAuliffe was investigated by the FBI regarding his private business dealings. Attorneys for the governor confirmed that he was being investigated for potential violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). McAuliffe has maintained throughout the investigation that he never illegally lobbied on behalf of any foreign government. McAuliffe was a key fundraiser during President Clinton’s administration.

Teneo, the global consulting firm mentioned in the case update, has close ties to Bill and Hillary Clinton, and its owner, Doug Band, is a close ally of the political couple. Band worked in the White House Counsel's Office during the Clinton administration. After leaving the government, he became a central figure in Bill Clinton’s post-presidency activities, helping to establish the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative.

According to reports by The Washington Post, the leaked memo revealed that Band was involved in orchestrating aggressive strategies for former President Clinton’s paid speaking engagements and consulting work—a period that coincided with his wife serving as Secretary of State in the Obama administration. Band faced scrutiny from Republicans over his methods of encouraging Teneo clients to donate to the Clinton Foundation.

The release of this document comes as Congressional Republicans and the Trump administration investigate the potential weaponization of the federal justice system and the FBI to target Republicans or protect Democrats.

In a case recently highlighted by CIA Director John Ratcliffe, declassified memos indicated that then-Vice President Joe Biden’s national security advisor intervened to block the distribution of an intelligence report containing unfavorable information regarding how Ukrainian officials viewed Hunter Biden’s local business dealings to policymakers.
