Eight Chinese nationals caught attempting to enter South Korea illegally via Taean, South Chungcheong Province, have all been placed under arrest.
According to the Taean Coast Guard on the 8th, the Seosan Branch of the Daejeon District Court issued arrest warrants for the eight Chinese nationals, including a person in their 40s identified as A, on charges of violating the Immigration Control Act.
The group, including A, departed from Weihai, Shandong Province, China, around 10:00 a.m. on the 5th aboard a 7-meter-long, 3-meter-wide, 115-horsepower small leisure boat. They were intercepted by the Coast Guard at 1:43 a.m. on the 6th, approximately 22 nautical miles (about 40 km) northwest of Gaeudo Island in Geunheung-myeon, Taean County.
During the interception, one person jumped into the sea while wearing a life vest but was rescued about 20 minutes later.
The investigation revealed that they intended to work illegally in Korea, and some had a history of being deported after being caught as illegal immigrants in the past.
