On Tuesday, the 14th, President Donald Trump posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom—the highest honor for a U.S. civilian—to the late leader Charlie Kirk.

Kirk inspired the youth of this generation and played a significant role in making national politics more conservative. The organization he founded, Turning Point USA, is credited with being a major foundation for Trump's reelection.

Referencing his schedule for maintaining global peace, President Trump told attendees, "There is nothing in the world I would want to miss this event for."

The ceremony was held on Tuesday following the President’s return at dawn from a whirlwind visit to Israel and Egypt to celebrate the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The event took place on what would have been Kirk’s 32nd birthday. Kirk was shot and killed during a Q&A session hosted by Turning Point USA at Utah Valley University on September 10.

This marks the first time President Trump has awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom during his second term.

Last month, at Kirk’s funeral in Arizona, President Trump delivered a eulogy, praising him as a "great American hero" and a "martyr" for freedom. Vice President JD Vance accompanied Kirk’s wife, Erika, on Air Force Two to escort his remains from Utah to Arizona.

Hours before the event, President Trump announced on social media that the ceremony was being moved from the White House East Room to the Rose Garden to accommodate a "very large and enthusiastic" crowd.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom was established in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy to honor individuals who have made exceptionally meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to significant cultural or other public or private endeavors.

During his first term, President Trump awarded the medal to individuals including golf legend Tiger Woods, former football coach Lou Holtz, conservative economist Arthur Laffer, Yankees Hall of Fame pitcher Mariano Rivera, and conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh. Notably, he presented the medal to Limbaugh during the 2020 State of the Union address. He also posthumously awarded the medal to Babe Ruth and Elvis Presley.

In his current term, Trump has also expressed his intent to award the medal to former New York Mayor and close ally Rudy Giuliani and Ben Carson, who served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development during his first term.
