Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson announced Tuesday that the state has completed its review of the voter registration list by cross-referencing it with citizenship information in the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) SAVE database.

Secretary Nelson stated that over 2,000 non-citizens suspected of illegally voting in recent state elections have been identified. This list of potential non-citizens has been forwarded to the local counties for eligibility investigation.

Those determined by the state to have illegally voted in state elections will be forwarded to the Attorney General's office for prosecution.

“I appreciate the federal government’s cooperation in confirming the citizenship of those on the voter rolls and maintaining an accurate voter registry,” Secretary Nelson said. “Only qualified U.S. citizens should participate in American elections.” She added, “The Trump administration’s decision to grant state governments free and direct access to this dataset for the first time was a game-changer.”

"Everyone's right to vote is sacred and must be protected," she said. "We encourage counties to conduct thorough investigations, just as they do with our other datasets, to ensure that no voter is ineligible. The SAVE database has proven to be a critical dataset, and it is one of many that we will continue to utilize to ensure that only qualified individuals participate in elections in Texas."

Nelson stated that in the statewide investigation, a total of 2,724 potential non-citizens were identified out of a voter list of 18 million.

These potential non-citizens will be sent letters notifying them of the findings, and they will have 30 days to submit proof of citizenship to maintain their registered voter status. Failure to meet the deadline will result in cancellation of registration, but re-registration is possible upon submission of citizenship documentation.
