Approximately 10 individuals of Korean descent were elected to state or city/county councils in local elections held on November 4th (Tuesday) in various regions including Virginia, New Jersey, and New York City, it was confirmed on the 6th.
According to the Korean American Grassroots Conference (KAGC), a grassroots organization that encourages political participation among Korean Americans, Irene Shin (Democrat, District 8) won a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates, and Ellen Park (Democrat, District 37) secured a victory in the New Jersey General Assembly.
With these wins, both Assemblywoman Shin and Assemblywoman Park have been re-elected for their third terms.
Furthermore, in New York City, Councilwoman Linda Lee (Democrat, District 23) achieved her third term as a city council member, and Councilwoman Julie Won (Democrat, District 26) was re-elected. In Duluth, Georgia, candidate Sarah Park (Independent, District 1) celebrated her first election victory with 54.3% of the vote.
Additionally, Christopher Kwak (Democrat) was elected in the Palisades Park City Council election in New Jersey, and Peter Suh (Democrat) won in the Fort Lee City Council election in the same state. Tae Lee (Republican) is also likely to be elected in the Englewood Cliffs City Council election in New Jersey.
At the county council level, Steffanie Fain (Democrat, District 5), whose mother is Korean, won a seat on the King County Council in Washington State, and Juleigh Chin (Democrat, District 9) was victorious in the Nassau County Legislature election in New York.
In addition, Eve Cho Guillergan (Democrat), a lawyer known for her expertise in immigration law, was elected as a judge in the Queens County Civil Court, 2nd District, in New York.
