Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Yonhap News.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that there are "no ongoing discussions" regarding the export of artificial intelligence (AI) chips using the company's cutting-edge 'Blackwell' architecture to China.
Huang made these remarks to reporters shortly after arriving in Tainan City, Taiwan, for meetings with semiconductor foundry manufacturer TSMC, Reuters and Bloomberg reported on the 7th (local time).
He added, "We have no plans to ship products to China at this time. The timing for Nvidia products to re-enter the Chinese market depends on China's decisions."
He further commented, "We hope China changes its policies."
Regarding his previous statement that China would win the AI race against the United States, Huang clarified, "That is not what I meant. I said that China has excellent AI technology and a large number of AI researchers."
He emphasized that 50% of the world's AI researchers are in China and that the most popular open-source AI models originate from China, stating, "The US must continue to move incredibly fast because China is moving very, very quickly."
Huang announced at a developer event (GTC) held in Washington D.C. late last month that Nvidia's AI chip sales in China had dropped to zero.
The Trump administration banned the export of Nvidia's H20 chip, a lower-performance chip for export to China, in April of this year.
The export ban was lifted three months later in July, but China then imposed an import ban on the chip, citing security concerns.
Nvidia had prepared the B30 chip for export to China, which uses the newly released 'Blackwell' architecture, but the Trump administration recently disallowed the export of this product to China, IT specialized media The Information reported yesterday.
President Trump also stated in a media interview that "no one except the United States will possess the most advanced chips."
Meanwhile, reports have emerged that China has also issued guidelines strictly prohibiting the use of foreign AI chips in new data centers funded by state capital, indicating an intensifying hegemony competition between the US and China over AI chips.
When asked for his thoughts on Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, planning to build semiconductor fabrication plants, Huang explained that while it is a "very important technology with extremely high demand," building advanced semiconductor production capacity like TSMC is "extremely difficult."
This is Huang's fourth visit to Taiwan this year. He stated that he came to encourage his friends at TSMC, their partner company, due to the very strong business performance. He plans to stay for a day and a half and attend TSMC's sports day.
