Severe Heatwave Warning Issued for 6 Regions in Gyeongnam, Posing Threat to Life

The hottest years on record are considered to be 2018, based on the highest temperature (41°C in Hongcheon), and 1994, based on the number of heatwave days (40.1 days). In 1994, the rainy season ended early, followed by the strong development of the North Pacific high-pressure system, which led to a prolonged period of clear, scorching weather and extreme heat.
Predictions are emerging that this year may surpass both those years. This is because the rainy season ended on the 25th, and the Tibetan high-pressure system and the North Pacific high-pressure system are now layered over the Korean Peninsula like a double blanket.
Currently, there are many regions experiencing temperatures of 39°C or higher, and there is no news of typhoons for the time being. So far this year, there have been 12.6 days of heatwaves and 5.7 days of tropical nights.
An official from the Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted, "For the next week or so, we expect westerly winds to blow without the influence of any typhoons," adding, "Due to the Foehn effect, where westerly winds cross the Sobaek Mountains and become hot and dry as they descend, temperatures are expected to be particularly high in the Yeongnam region."
As of 2 p.m. on the 28th, temperatures reached 39°C in Yangsan, 38.2°C in North Changwon, 38.1°C in Changnyeong, 37.6°C in Uiryeong, 37.5°C in Gimhae, and 36.7°C in Daegu. Currently, a serious heatwave warning is in effect for six regions in Gyeongnam: Yangsan, Miryang, Uiryeong, Changnyeong, central Hapcheon, and Gimhae.
A serious heatwave warning is the highest level of heat advisory issued when extreme, life-threatening heat is expected, with a peak perceived temperature of 38°C or a peak actual temperature of 39°C or higher.

Animals are also suffering from the heat. Images of piglets lying sprawled out in a pig shed due to the heatwave have also been released by the media.
The Korea Meteorological Administration official stated, "Centered on the Gyeongnam region, the heat is at a life-threatening level, so it is necessary to stop or postpone outdoor activities and work unless they are essential," adding, "We urge citizens to move to cool places, stay hydrated, and check on the safety of their family, neighbors, and those around them."
