President Donald Trump offered a potential compromise on the government shutdown stalemate on Saturday, proposing that the federal subsidies currently paid to insurance companies under Obamacare (ACA) be given directly to taxpayers.

In a Truth Social post, President Trump stated, "I recommend to our Republican Senators that they suggest to the Radical Left Democrats that we will be giving hundreds of billions of dollars that are now being sucked up by insurance companies to rescue the poor healthcare system that ObamaCare has provided, directly to the people, so that they can buy much better healthcare, and have money left over."

"In other words, take it away from the giant, evil insurance companies and give it back to the people, and repeal and replace ObamaCare, the worst healthcare insurance in the world on a dollars spent basis," he added.

The remarks came hours before the Senate reconvened at noon on Friday, after rejecting a bill to resume pay for hundreds of thousands of federal employees during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

The President reiterated his stance on Saturday afternoon through another Truth post: "We cannot continue to pour billions of dollars into the failed ObamaCare system supported by Democrat insurers. Now that money should go directly to the people, and we must drive out the 'fat cat' insurers from this corrupt healthcare system. The people can directly purchase much better insurance for much less money, and save themselves a tremendous amount of money!!!"

The Senate remains without consensus on how to reopen the government.

Both parties are engaged in public disputes, claiming the other side has not submitted written proposals, leading to skepticism about their willingness to negotiate.

Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) stated on the Senate floor Saturday, "To be clear, people making millions of dollars will also be receiving COVID ObamaCare subsidies from the Biden administration. You heard that correctly. There is no income cap."

Moreno pointed out that he intended to ask, "Are we going to continue with a 'zero premium' system where there is a guaranteed massive amount of fraud?" but before he could even ask the question, Senator Chuck Schumer "stormed out of the room, seemingly having no interest in hearing any opposition or engaging in any substantive negotiations."

He then asked, referring to Schumer, "Does he want to pass this money directly to the insurance companies?"

He continued, "I don't think the American people are hearing the truth. This money does not go to ObamaCare enrollees. This is a check that the federal government is writing to the wealthiest insurance companies on planet Earth."

Moreno added, referring to Senator Schumer, "He wants to remove the income caps and give COVID-19 subsidies to millionaires. He wants to make premiums zero dollars, which is riddled with fraud. And he wants to make insurance companies richer."

This sentiment aligns with President Trump's earlier claims on social media.

An estimated 24 million Americans receive benefits through Obamacare. While they must meet certain income requirements, the contentious issue in the Senate involves an expansion of COVID-19 subsidies under the Biden administration, which allows subsidies to be provided regardless of income level.

The Republican party has explained its reasons for refusing the Democrats' request for an unconditional extension of all Obamacare subsidies. However, mainstream media outlets have oversimplified the issue, reporting that Democrats want a funding bill that includes insurance subsidies expiring at the end of the year, while Republicans insist that the government must be reopened by passing an unconditional funding bill first, before Congress addresses other matters.
