Apple, facing criticism for excessively charging fees for smartphone app payments, has announced it will lower fees for "mini apps."

Apple stated on the 13th (local time) that it will charge developers participating in its "Mini App Companion Program" only a 15% fee.

This is half the typical 30% app payment fee Apple imposes.

Mini apps are lightweight applications that can be added within other apps, rather than being directly downloaded from the App Store, Apple's app marketplace.

They are primarily simple games or apps with basic functions, but their usage has been gradually increasing recently.

China's WeChat also offers millions of mini apps created by developers, allowing users to access various functions such as package tracking and public transportation route inquiries.

OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is also supporting mini app installations within its chatbot.

However, to participate in Apple's program, the mini app must be released by an external party not directly or indirectly controlled by the existing app developer.

Additionally, measures must be in place to verify user age and ensure that only age-appropriate content is accessible.

Tencent, which operates WeChat, has already stated its intention to participate in Apple's program, according to Bloomberg News.

Apple's move to reduce fees for mini apps is interpreted as a response to pressure from the United States and Europe to lower app payment fees, which are considered excessive.

The European Union (EU) mandated lower app payment fees, along with allowing external payments and external app marketplaces, through the Digital Markets Act (DMA) implemented in March last year.

A U.S. court also ordered Apple in April of this year in a lawsuit filed by Epic Games not to block external app payments.

However, Apple argues that if such regulations are applied, users will be exposed to risks of fraud and other damages as they are connected outside the app without safety measures.

Apple also cited a recent report on the European digital market by analysis firm "Analysis Group," pointing out that despite fee reductions, most app developers have maintained or even increased service and subscription prices, arguing that the relevant regulations have not led to the intended outcomes.
