The People Power Party on the 15th once again targeted the Democratic Party of Korea's policy to abolish the crime of breach of trust, continuing its offensive against the ruling party following the prosecution's decision to waive its appeal in the first trial of the Daejang-dong case.
Supreme Council Member Kim Min-soo criticized this at a press conference held at the National Assembly, stating, "If the abolition of the crime of breach of trust actually occurs, this will be just the beginning. If the rule of law in Korea is destroyed one by one, Korean law will no longer be able to protect the people and will be reduced to a tool of power."
He continued, "If laws are enacted to abolish the crime of breach of trust, introduce a fourth trial system, and increase the number of Supreme Court justices, solely for the sake of Lee Jae-myung, how can this be considered a state governed by the rule of law?" He also broadly denounced the Democratic Party's self-proclaimed judicial reform proposals.
Senior Spokesperson Park Sung-hoon stated in a commentary, "The primary beneficiaries of abolishing the crime of breach of trust are the Daejang-dong gang and President Lee," and criticized, "If the crime of breach of trust disappears, courts will issue verdicts of acquittal without needing to determine guilt or innocence, and President Lee's legal responsibility in the Daejang-dong case will effectively vanish. This is a trick to cover up the Daejang-dong case by eliminating the crime of breach of trust."
He emphasized, "The abolition of the crime of breach of trust, which is a judicial coup for a single absolution for President Lee, and the exercise of external pressure to eliminate President Lee's judicial risks will undoubtedly face strong resistance and decisive judgment from the common sense of the public."
Representative Joo Jin-woo also posted on Facebook, "The abolition of the crime of breach of trust is precisely power-driven organized crime aimed at nullifying Lee Jae-myung's trial. It means all of Lee Jae-myung's Daejang-dong crimes, Baekhyeon-dong corruption, and misuse of corporate credit cards cannot be punished."
The People Power Party criticized the prosecution's decision to waive its appeal in relation to the request by lawyer Nam Wook, one of the private developers in the Daejang-dong case, for the release of frozen assets that had been subject to forfeiture by the prosecution.
Spokesperson Lee Choong-hyeong stated in a commentary, "The public is once again shocked by the shameless behavior of trying to seize money immediately after the forfeiture amount of 0 won was confirmed. This is another reversal of roles caused by the prosecution's waiver of appeal. A path has opened for astronomical illicit gains to return to their hands."
Supreme Council Member Kim Min-soo, referencing the retirement speech of former acting Prosecutor General Roh Man-seok, who resigned following the Daejang-dong appeal waiver incident, said, "The retirement speech did not clarify the full details of the appeal waiver. Many citizens feel it was not a retirement speech but a speech guaranteeing an undisclosed promise for a promotion."
