The United States began its assessment immediately after concluding the South Korea-US trade negotiations. The fact that the FBI's late announcement of Director Kash Patel's visit to Japan, South Korea, and China is seen as the backdrop to this interpretation. The ultimate military strategic goal of the United States is to block China's expansion into the Pacific. Therefore, South Korea's political stability and the management of its geopolitical alignment, which guards this gateway, are emerging as central variables in the strategy. However, the Lee Jae-myung administration, failing to grasp this structure in the South Korea-US trade negotiations, has instead led South Korea into a trap.

The Lee Jae-myung administration's biggest mistake was understanding the South Korea-US negotiations as a mere 'transaction.' By focusing solely on visible items like wording, tariffs, and subsidies, they failed to see the design structure in which these items were placed.

As the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was released, the public, who had only trusted the government's announcements, is now belatedly confronting the truth of the negotiation outcomes. They are realizing that they were not equal parties at the negotiation table but rather contractors brought in retrospectively to an already completed blueprint.

The Lee Jae-myung administration's misjudgment has resulted in structural constraints beyond financial losses. Once the design begins to function, it cannot be reversed, and the blueprint is maintained regardless of the designer's intentions. The current problem for South Korea is not that it 'negotiated poorly' but that it has become a 'country trapped by a design.' While the Lee Jae-myung administration was congratulating itself on a successful negotiation, South Korea was sinking deeper into an invisible snare.

The statements released by Lee Jae-myung and the Presidential Office after signing the South Korea-US trade agreement MOU suggest they were aware of this situation. The Presidential Office's announcement, which misled the public with 'half-truths' instead of an honest confession of 'it couldn't be helped,' makes this inference possible.

The essence of this negotiation is not numbers or tariffs, but structure. President Trump's 'Up Front design' is a strategic structure that reconfigures semiconductors, batteries, energy, finance, and security into a single supply chain system. Europe and Japan participated to some extent in this design phase, but South Korea was summoned after the design was completed.

If one participates in construction without seeing the blueprint, they can neither hold initiative nor the right to interpretation. If an error occurs, only the contractor is replaced. This is precisely where South Korea stands now.

This flow is also evident in the US's official announcements. The FBI stated in a press release on the 17th that "Director Kash Patel visited Japan, South Korea, and China during the week of November 4th." While packaged as 'alliance consultations,' the prevailing analysis is that it was actually a pre-construction inspection phase to verify whether the designed structure would function properly on the ground. At the moment Lee Jae-myung was comforting himself with the word 'agreement,' Trump was moving to the next stage with a satisfied expression.

What is noteworthy here is the Trump administration's perspective on South Korean politics.

The primary reason the US is interested in South Korean politics is to counter China. The 'EAST UP' concept, emphasized by General Paul LaCamera, Commander of the UN Command and US Forces Korea, envisions using the Korean Peninsula as a forward base for US forces to block China's Pacific expansion. For this strategy to be effective, it is not an option but a necessity to assess and respond to South Korea's diplomatic and economic alignment.

It is perhaps a natural progression that predictions are emerging that the US, having secured economic and military leverage in South Korea's trade and industry, as well as its politics and military, through Trump's Up Front strategy, will support political forces that counterbalance the Lee Jae-myung administration. This is because Lee Jae-myung's administration's pro-China tendencies, China's expanding influence in the West Sea and the Korean Peninsula, and attempts to control the judiciary and media are considered 'strategic uncertainties' from the US perspective.

The first point of interest for the US is the first-instance verdict for former President Yoon Suk-yeol, scheduled for January next year. The US is not focusing on Yoon Suk-yeol as an individual. The US is paying attention to him because he is at the center of the anti-Lee Jae-myung front, and because they believe that if this axis collapses, South Korea's strategic alignment could tilt towards China.

While there is no confirmation of what moves the US will make, supporters within South Korea and some political circles are pinning their hopes on his release.

Against this backdrop, the increased assertiveness of Jang Dong-hyuk, the interim leader of the People Power Party, is interpreted as a political judgment that reads the US's strategic currents. In addition, Hwang Kyo-ahn, the leader of the Future Korea Party, who has increased his political stature by publicly resisting the special prosecutor's arrest warrant execution, is also emerging as an alternative. The right-wing camp is showing movement towards forming a new balance of power by interpreting the US's strategic signals.

What remains constant is that the US will, in some form, have to choose forces that counterbalance Lee Jae-myung.

The design of the South Korea-US trade negotiations has already been completed by the US. China is expanding its influence in the West Sea and along the Korean Peninsula border, and the US is combining economic and trade leverage with military plans to re-align South Korea's strategic orientation. Within this structure, South Korea's internal balance and alignment are no longer a matter solely of domestic politics.

The Lee Jae-myung administration's emphasis on economic cooperation with China after the conclusion of negotiations with the US appears to be an attempt to lay the groundwork to counter this trend. However, concerns are also growing that the more this administration strengthens this approach, the deeper South Korea will fall into a abyss. The outcomes of the negotiations clearly demonstrate this.
