President Donald Trump responded positively to Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene's (R-Ga.) announcement that she would resign from her House seat on January 5th, amid a cooling of their relationship over the past month.
ABC News reported on X (formerly Twitter) that they spoke with Trump by phone about Greene's resignation, and that Trump stated, "This is really great news for the country. It's a tremendous thing."
When asked if Greene had informed him of her decision in advance, Trump replied, "No, that doesn't matter. But I think it's a really good thing. I think she should be happy."
On Saturday morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social, "Marjorie 'Traitor' Brown decided to 'quit' rather than face the disastrous poll numbers and a strong Trump-backed primary challenger that she has NO shot at winning!"
He altered Greene's surname to Brown, previously stating that the name was "rotten" and that green rots to brown.
Trump also stated, "Her relationship with Tom Massie of Kentucky, perhaps the worst Republican House member in decades (because he votes against the Republican Party (and really good bills!)), also did not help her."
He added, "For whatever reason, mostly because I haven't had her endless phone calls, Marjorie has turned bad. Nevertheless, I will always appreciate Marjorie and her contributions to our country! DJT."
Greene, first elected to Congress in 2020, had positioned herself as a staunch Trump supporter before clashing with him on several issues, including the release of Justice Department documents related to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Greene's resignation appears to follow Trump's withdrawal of support and public criticism of her political approach, calling her a "maniac" and a "traitor."
In a video announcing her resignation, Greene stated, "In all of that, I have never broken or turned my back on my campaign promises, and I have only voiced my disagreements in a few areas, such as my opposition to H1B visas replacing American jobs, a moratorium on AI states, a 50-year mortgage scam that would put people in debt for life, my strong opposition to all foreign entanglements in wars, and my demand for the release of documents related to Epstein. Other than that, my voting record has been solidly in support of the party and the president."
Some speculate that Greene, a former fervent supporter of Trump, is completely turning her back on him because she may be considering running for Georgia governor or a seat in the U.S. Senate next year.
This is because most of the issues on which Greene has clashed with Trump are elements that cause dissatisfaction with Trump among Georgia residents.
Meanwhile, Representative Randy Fine (R-Fla.) stated he was "very pleased" to hear of Greene's resignation, calling her an "antisemite" and arguing that the Republican Party should not have antisemitic views like Greene's reflected in its policies.
Representative Greg Murphy (R-N.C.) called the sudden resignation announcement "a surprise," regardless of any disagreements with the president.
Regarding rising insurance premiums, Murphy emphasized that the issue is linked to insurance company profits, stating, "It's very clear that Obamacare was written by insurance companies for insurance companies. Premiums are going to go up anyway. Insurance premiums are bound to increase because insurance company profits have declined."
Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) also called it "completely unexpected" and expressed concern that her resignation would narrow the party's margin in the House.
