Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Tuesday that Kyiv is ready to pursue a U.S.-backed peace plan and is willing to discuss sensitive matters with President Donald Trump in talks that would also include European allies.
In a speech to what he called a "coalition of the willing," Reuters reported that Zelensky urged European leaders to establish a framework for deploying a "reassurance force" to Ukraine and to continue supporting Kyiv as long as Moscow shows no willingness to end the war.
President Trump also stated on Tuesday during the White House turkey pardoning ceremony, "I think we are very, very close to a deal. I have ended eight wars in nine months. And we are working on solving the last war. It's not easy, but I think we'll get there."
He further posted on Truth Social, "My team has made tremendous progress in the last week on ending the war between Russia and Ukraine. 25,000 soldiers lost their lives just last month. The existing 28-point peace proposal, drafted by the United States, has been meticulously adjusted to reflect the additional opinions of both parties, and only a few issues remain."
President Trump announced, "To finalize this peace proposal, I have instructed Ambassador Steve Witkoff to meet with President Putin in Moscow, while simultaneously, Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll will meet with the Ukrainian side."
He added, "I will be briefed on all progress along with Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of War Pete Hegses, and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. I look forward to meeting with President Zelensky and President Putin soon, but only when a deal to end this war is finally concluded or in its final stages."
He concluded, "Thank you for your interest in this very important matter, and let us all pray together for peace as soon as possible!"
