House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has subpoenaed former Special Counsel Jack Smith to appear for a closed-door deposition on December 17.
This signals an intensifying committee investigation into the cases brought by Smith against former President Donald Trump and his co-defendants.
In a letter sent to Smith's law firm, Covington & Burling, on Wednesday, Jordan stated that the chairman is "continuing our oversight of the Special Counsel's Office operations that you led" and is "particularly focused on the prosecution of your team's cases against President Donald J. Trump and his co-defendants."
The committee informed Smith that he must confirm his availability to testify and was ordered to produce relevant documents by December 12.
Rep. Jordan stated that the Judiciary Committee is exercising its authority under House Rule X, which grants jurisdiction over Department of Justice oversight and potential legislative reforms.
The letter, which was also sent to Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), includes both the deposition subpoena and the document request subpoena.
