Taiwan has expressed strong concern that China's display of military presence across East Asia poses a threat to the entire Indo-Pacific region.
According to Taiwan's Central Radio and other sources on the 5th, Presidential Office spokesperson Kua Yay-hui made these remarks to reporters at the opening ceremony of a medical conference.
Spokesperson Kua stated, "China's military actions are not limited to the Taiwan Strait. They extend from the Yellow Sea southward, from the waters east of Diaoyutai (Senkaku Islands in Japanese) to the South China Sea, and further to the Western Pacific, threatening and impacting the entire Indo-Pacific region. China must act with the responsibility of a major power and exercise restraint."
He added, "President Lai Ching-te has instructed the Ministry of National Defense and national security agencies to thoroughly assess the situation and report promptly. The public can rest assured as national security is not a concern."
"We are confident we can handle this well," Kua concluded.
Earlier, Reuters reported that China had deployed over 100 naval and coast guard vessels in waters stretching from the southern Yellow Sea through the East China Sea to the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean the previous day.
China has not provided specific details regarding this large-scale exercise.
However, China's maritime activities have increased following remarks by Sanae Takaichi, a Japanese minister, suggesting intervention in the event of a Taiwan emergency, which has heightened Sino-Japanese tensions.
