Why aren't the investigations conducted based on evidence?
Yoon Young-ho, former head of the Unification Church World Headquarters, appears at the Seoul Central District Court in July for a pretrial detainment hearing related to the 'Geonjinbeopsa's request for favor' allegations. Yonhap News
The controversy surrounding Yoon Young-ho, former head of the Unification Church World Headquarters, has been superficially framed as "church-state collusion." However, the investigative progress and the Unification Church's response reveal that this case goes beyond the typical framework of church-state collusion. We are now at a point where we must question the reasons why certain suspicions were intentionally excluded during the investigation.
The external environment surrounding Yoon Young-ho changed rapidly. While the President did not explicitly name a specific religious organization, he posed a question about whether there were ways to dismantle the problematic religious foundation. At the time, political circles and the media interpreted this statement as effectively raising an issue directed at the Unification Church foundation. This question later garnered recognition as the decisive starting point for the discourse on "liquidating the Unification Church."
Subsequently, the Unification Church officially denied Yoon Young-ho's related statements, asserting they were untrue, and initiated criminal charges against him based on these remarks. Concurrently, Yoon Young-ho was stripped of his position and excommunicated. Yoon Young-ho became an isolated party, no longer an insider protected by the denomination, nor a clear whistle-blower for the public good. This series of actions effectively nullified the legal credibility of Yoon Young-ho's statements.
At this juncture, questions arise regarding the direction of the investigation.
Given his position as head of the World Headquarters, his close ties to the foundation, and allegations of financial impropriety, the easiest way for the Unification Church to characterize this case as an individual's deviation would be to file a lawsuit for breach of trust and embezzlement. Notably, embezzlement and breach of trust are matters that can be investigated immediately upon recognition of the criminal act, even without a formal complaint.
Questions also arise concerning the method the Unification Church chose.
Their complaint was not related to financial crimes but a criminal accusation targeting the content of his testimony. Legally, this choice is highly likely to be defamation based on the dissemination of false information, and it shifts the focus of the investigation from the financial flow to the veracity of the testimony. This is akin to taking a complex detour when the Unification Church, having suffered financial damages, could have directly pursued a more straightforward path. This is where the question arises: 'What did they want to hide?'
Yoon Young-ho's personal background also warrants a re-examination.
Based on media reports, it has been repeatedly mentioned that it was not Yoon Young-ho's wife herself, but individuals from her maternal family who were involved in the financial and accounting lines of the Unification Church or its related foundations. While their specific titles and authority remain unconfirmed, this connection makes it difficult to view Yoon Young-ho solely as an external representative. It is difficult to conclude that he was in a position where he had no knowledge of the financial structure whatsoever.

Another critical turning point that alters the nature of the case is 'election funds.'
Church-state collusion may remain within the realm of political interpretation, but election funds are a matter of grave criminal offenses directly related to the fairness of elections. If the investigation enters this domain, its substance must be proven through thorough records and physical evidence, not just statements. This is why greater doubt remains about the lack of proactive investigative efforts into financial crimes.
The reappearance of Seongnam in this context is also relevant.
It is publicly known that Mrs. Kim Hye-kyung graduated from Sunhwa Arts High School, which is operated by the Unification Church foundation, and that the predecessor to the current Seongnam FC was Seongnam Ilhwa, a club affiliated with the Unification Church. These facts alone do not immediately imply a conclusion. However, as Yoon Young-ho's case shifts to an examination of the long-term structures of finance, organizations, and local power, past points of contact are re-emerging as subjects of verification.
The recently released audio recording also falls within this narrative.
The fact that the individual appearing in the recording is identified as Jeong Jin-sang, former Deputy Secretary-General of the Democratic Party, who has been classified as one of President Lee Jae-myung's closest aides, magnifies the weight of the case, regardless of the content's veracity. The status of 'closest aide' signifies not just personal friendship but also a key power figure in election and organizational management. His appearance indicates that this case has escalated beyond private contact or religious lobbying to become a significant incident connected to the core of power.
Of course, the legal validity and context of the audio recording require further verification.
However, the significance of this recording is clear. When combined with Yoon Young-ho's testimony, this recording can serve as a crucial clue for cross-verifying the substance of contact and financial flow, going beyond the issue of the testimony's credibility. Despite this, investigative authorities still appear to be relying excessively on Yoon Young-ho's individual testimony alone.
The question we must ask regarding this case is simple.
Is this a substantive church-state collusion case, or is it the result of being lost in a narrative dependent solely on testimony, thus avoiding the core issue of financial verification?
If Yoon Young-ho has any remaining hidden cards, it is likely to be material evidence that he has not yet produced, rather than further revelations.
The conclusion of this case will be determined not by his words, but at the moment the evidence comes into play.
