Myung Tae-gyun. Yonhap News
Prosecutors have requested heavy sentences for Myung Tae-gyun, a so-called "political broker" accused of illegally trading political funds in exchange for nominations, and former People Power Party lawmaker Kim Young-sun.
During the closing trial at the Criminal Division 4 of the Changwon District Court on the 22nd, the prosecution requested a sentence of six years in prison for Mr. Myung, comprising five years for violating the Political Funds Act and one year for instigating evidence concealment. For former lawmaker Kim, a five-year prison sentence was sought.
The prosecution pointed out that Mr. Myung exerted influence by mediating money and valuables during the nomination process for National Assembly members and local elections, and that this constitutes a serious crime that undermines the fairness and democratic procedures of the nomination system. In particular, they stated, "If money politics interferes with the nomination process, there is a high risk that candidates will be selected irrespective of their qualifications, causing significant societal harm."
This case once again highlights the challenges of ensuring transparency in political funds and restoring trust in the nomination system, with the final judgment expected to be revealed through the court's sentencing.
