Bipartisan lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives, who have shown interest in East Asian affairs, have condemned China's actions pressuring Japan following Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's remarks hinting at intervention in the event of a Taiwan contingency.
On the 26th (local time), House Foreign Affairs Committee Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific Ranking Member Ami Bera (D-California) announced that he has introduced a bipartisan resolution condemning China's coercive actions against Japan and reaffirming the United States' unwavering commitment to its allies in the Indo-Pacific region.
The resolution was co-sponsored by House Foreign Affairs Committee Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific Chair Young Kim (R-California), Congressional Friends of Japan Caucus Co-Chairs Andy Barr (R-Kentucky) and Diana DeGette (D-Colorado), and Congressional Caucus on Taiwan Co-Chair Joaquin Castro (D-Texas).
The resolution acknowledged the common interest between the U.S. and Japan in maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and urged the U.S. President to work with allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific region to counter China's coercive economic and diplomatic practices.
In a press release, Rep. Bera stated, "I deeply appreciate Japan's unwavering commitment to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and fully support Japan's right to speak in defense of its own security," adding, "This resolution reaffirms the U.S. Congress's ironclad commitment to the U.S.-Japan alliance and the preservation of a rules-based international order."
Rep. Young Kim said, "Japan is one of America's closest allies and a vital democratic partner in the Indo-Pacific," and stated, "This resolution sends a clear message that we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Japan and our allies against authoritarian aggression."
This resolution is significant as it criticizes China's actions at the congressional level and urges the Trump administration to respond, at a time when the Trump administration was not actively assisting Japan.
Tensions between Japan and China escalated after Prime Minister Takaichi's remarks on the 7th of last month, suggesting that Japan could exercise collective self-defense and intervene in the event of a Taiwan contingency, which China strongly opposed.
China has been pressuring Japan through economic retaliation, such as banning imports of Japanese seafood, and by escalating military tensions. However, the Trump administration has appeared to prioritize managing its relationship with China over supporting its ally, Japan.
