U.S. President Donald Trump on December 28 (local time) praised the United States' significant contribution to the ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, while criticizing the United Nations for its lack of helpfulness in the process.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, President Trump stated, "I am pleased to announce that the fighting between Thailand and Cambodia has been temporarily suspended, and they will coexist peacefully again under a recent agreement on an existing treaty."
He continued, "I want to congratulate the excellent leadership of two great leaders who reached this swift and very fair conclusion," adding, "It was fast and decisive, as all such situations should be."
He then remarked, "The United States, as always, is proud to have contributed (to this ceasefire)," and "With eight wars and conflicts that I have resolved and stopped over the past 11 months, perhaps the United States has become the true United Nations."
President Trump emphasized, "The United Nations has been of little help in these matters, including the ongoing situation between Russia and Ukraine," and "The United Nations must start taking a more active role and engagement for world peace."
Following armed clashes in July, Thailand and Cambodia signed a ceasefire agreement, but they engaged in further armed conflict in the border area for 20 days starting in early December. The defense ministers of both countries met on the previous day and issued a joint statement announcing their agreement to halt hostilities.
President Trump had spoken by phone with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on December 12, mediating a ceasefire between the two sides.
