President Donald Trump has vetoed legislation passed by Congress for the first time since the launch of his second term administration on January 20.
On Tuesday, the 30th, President Trump released messages to Congress on the White House website, stating his veto of two bills: the "Arkansas Valley Conduit Completion Act" (H.R.131) and the "Miccosukee Reservation Amendment Act" (H.R.504), which he vetoed on the 29th.
Both bills had received bipartisan support in both chambers of Congress, passing under expedited procedures with unanimous consent, awaiting only President Trump's signature.
The veto by President Trump sent both bills back to the House of Representatives. If the House and Senate pass the bills again with a two-thirds majority vote from their respective members, they can become law regardless of the presidential veto.
The AVC project has been ongoing for decades to supply safe drinking water to 39 communities in the eastern plains of Colorado, where groundwater salinity is high and radiation sometimes leaks from wells. The proposed legislation aimed to complete this project through federal funding.
President Trump pointed out that although the project was first approved in 1962, it had been delayed for decades due to economic infeasibility, and that he could not force American taxpayers to bear additional immense costs for a failed project over decades.
He stated, "Enough is enough. My administration is working to stop American taxpayers from funding expensive and unreliable policies."
Regarding the veto, U.S. Senator Michael Bennet (Democrat-Colorado), who co-sponsored the bill, criticized President Trump on X, stating, "This is not governance. It's vindictiveness. It's unacceptable."
Media outlets, including Reuters and AFP, noted that President Trump had requested the pardon of Tina Peters, a former Republican election official, from Colorado Governor Jared Polis, a Democrat, but Governor Polis refused.
Peters was indicted for copying and removing hard disk drives from voting machines to secure evidence of election fraud, and was sentenced to nine years in prison and is currently incarcerated in a Colorado prison.
The other bill vetoed by President Trump was the "Miccosukee Reservation Amendment Act," which aimed to expand the Miccosukee Tribe's control over the area known as Osceola Camp within Everglades National Park in Florida.
This tribe had opposed the construction of "Alligator Alcatraz," a large-scale migrant detention facility that the Trump administration intended to build in the national park this year, citing environmental damage to the wetlands.
In his veto message, President Trump stated, "The Miccosukee Tribe has sought federal funding and special treatment, while actively hindering the sensible immigration policies that Americans firmly voted for when I was elected. The federal government is not responsible for the costs of resolving issues in areas where the tribe has not been granted possessory authority."
