Kang Sun-woo of the Democratic Party of Korea has declared her departure from the party in relation to allegations of receiving nomination funds.
Three days after the report on the 2022 local election nomination fund allegations on the 1st, Rep. Kang announced her departure from the party with the intention of not burdening the party or its members, and stated that she will faithfully participate in the party's procedures and actively cooperate with the prosecution's investigation.
In a report on the 29th of last month, allegations were raised that Rep. Kang's camp received 100 million won from Seoul City Councilor Kim Kyung under the pretext of nomination funds during the 2022 local elections.
Rep. Kang reportedly discussed this situation with Rep. Kim Byung-ki, who was the secretary of the Seoul City Party Nomination Committee at the time.
However, Rep. Kang maintained her position, stating, "I have never received any money," and insisted that she repeatedly instructed for the money to be returned after it was received and confirmed that it was indeed returned.
While fully denying the allegations of receiving nomination funds, Rep. Kang Sun-woo chose to leave the party considering the potential repercussions on the party and intends to prove her innocence through the upcoming investigation process.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party also resolved to expel Rep. Kang Sun-woo.
