Tech mogul and billionaire Elon Musk has hinted at a return to the political stage, vowing to prevent the "ruin of America." In a New Year's Day social media post, he pledged to support Republican candidates in the 2026 midterm elections.
Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, described the upcoming congressional elections as a fight for the nation's survival in an X post.
"If the radical left wins, America is finished," Musk wrote. "They will open the floodgates to illegal immigration and fraud. It will no longer be America."
The announcement marks a significant turning point for Musk, whose relationship with former President Donald Trump has been a rollercoaster of high-level cooperation and public criticism over the past year, according to the New York Post.
Musk, who served as a key spokesperson for the Trump campaign during the 2024 presidential election and led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) for 180 days after Trump's return to the White House, departed the administration in May 2025.
This "unpleasant breakup" was triggered by Musk's strong opposition to a landmark $3.3 trillion spending package known as "One Big Bargain Bill" (OBBBA). Musk vehemently denounced the bill as a "disgusting bill full of pork disguised as a bloated budget."
Over the summer, Musk also threatened to form a "Party of America" and suggested Trump would face impeachment.
However, recent sightings of the two together, particularly a video Musk shared in November of Trump patting his arm, suggest a strategic reconciliation to maintain Republican control of Congress.
Musk's return to the Republican fold carries immense weight. During the 2024 election cycle, he emerged as the nation's top individual political donor, contributing more than $290 million – nearly $100 million more than any other individual donor.
While the exact amount of his contributions for 2026 will not be disclosed until Federal Election Commission (FEC) reports are released later this month, "fat checks" have already been written, according to sources familiar with the matter, the New York Post reported.
Musk had previously vowed to "fire" any Republicans who supported the 2025 spending bill but reportedly softened that stance to focus on a larger fight with Democrats.

Musk has not entirely abandoned plans to start a third party, but his associates said the project is currently on hold to avoid jeopardizing his relationship with Vice President J.D. Vance ahead of the 2028 election.
Early national polls for the 2026 midterm elections showed Democrats with a slight edge in congressional races, but recent off-year results in Virginia and New Jersey, along with a series of special elections, have raised new questions about whether Republicans can gain momentum heading into the November elections.
Democrats hold an early 4-point advantage in 2026, with 46.2% to Republicans' 42.2%, according to the latest RealClearPolitics averages.
In the most closely watched state-level elections of 2025, Democrats won decisive victories in both the Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial races. Strategists from both parties viewed these contests as an early test of the political climate under a Trump presidency.
In Virginia, Democratic candidate Abigail Spanberger defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears by roughly 58% to 42% of the vote.
Democrat Mikie Sherrill won the New Jersey election, defeating Republican Jack Ciattarelli, with official results showing Sherrill with 56.9% and Ciattarelli with 42.5%.
Democrats also pointed to their performance in special elections as another indicator of their momentum.
In Iowa, Democrat Renee Hardman won a state Senate special election in late December by an overwhelming margin of 71.4% to 28.5%, preventing Republicans from reclaiming a two-thirds supermajority in the Senate.
In congressional special elections, Republicans have not necessarily lost seats, but Democrats have highlighted races where they lost by narrow margins.
In two House special elections in Florida, Democrats performed double-digit points better compared to 2024, although Republicans won both contests, according to Newsweek.
A special election is scheduled for New Jersey's 11th Congressional District, which will serve as an early barometer for the first major federal elections of 2026. The special election will take place after Representative Sherrill resigns her House seat upon winning the governorship.
The special primary is scheduled for February 5, with the general election on April 16.
