Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, arrested in a swift operation by U.S. special forces, has arrived in New York and been placed in a local detention facility.
Prior to his detention, Maduro appeared composed in a video taken at the U.S. Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) office, saying "Good night" in both Spanish and English.
According to CNN, The New York Times (NYT), and other outlets on the 3rd (local time), former President Maduro was booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Brooklyn, New York City, that night.
An officer on duty at the detention center reportedly used a loudspeaker to inform over 100 protesters gathered outside that Maduro had entered the facility, and the crowd cheered while waving Venezuelan flags, the NYT reported.
This detention center where President Maduro is being held is known for housing high-profile inmates, including hip-hop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, convicted of sex crimes, and Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX.
Earlier, around 1 AM (Eastern Time) that day, the U.S. deployed a large contingent of forces to the presidential safe house in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, arresting President Maduro and his wife, and transporting them by helicopter to the assault ship USS Iwo Jima, which was on standby.

After traveling to the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay aboard the USS Iwo Jima, Maduro transferred to a U.S. government aircraft prepared by the FBI and flew to Stewart Air Force Base in New York.
At Stewart Base, Maduro was captured by foreign media disembarking from the plane, surrounded by federal government officials including FBI agents, and setting foot on American soil.
Boarding a helicopter again, President Maduro arrived in Manhattan, New York, around 7 PM. U.S. media reported that the U.S. government then took Maduro and his wife to the DEA's New York field office.
A short video clip circulated on social media showing Maduro, wearing a black hoodie and a cap, being escorted within a building believed to be the DEA's New York field office.
Subsequently, the White House's X (formerly Twitter) emergency response account shared a video of Maduro being escorted down a hallway inside the DEA New York field office building, with the caption "perp walked."
In the video, Maduro, with a seemingly relaxed expression, said to the DEA agents escorting him, "Good night, right?" in Spanish, followed by "Good night, Happy New Year" in English, displaying a composed demeanor.
A carpet bearing the marking "DEA NYD," signifying the DEA's New York Division, was laid on the floor of the hallway where Maduro was walking.
President Maduro, who was indicted in March 2020 during the first Trump administration on charges of drug trafficking and money laundering, is expected to appear in federal court in Manhattan next week.
The U.S. Department of Justice released a superseding indictment that supplemented the original charges. The new indictment added his wife, son, and Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, along with other family members and associates, as defendants.
The U.S. government's stance is that they were involved with FARC, a former Colombian rebel group designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S., and drug cartels, in smuggling thousands of tons of cocaine into the United States.
