Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who was dramatically arrested by the U.S. military and extradited to the United States, will appear in court for the first time on the 5th (local time).

According to U.S. media outlets including the Washington Post, New York Times, and CNN on the 4th, he is scheduled to appear at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York in Manhattan, New York, at noon Eastern Time on the 5th (2 a.m. Korean time on the 6th) for arraignment.

His wife, Cilia Flores, who was arrested and extradited along with President Maduro, will also be present.

The U.S. Department of Justice released a new indictment against President Maduro the previous day.

He was indicted on charges of 'narcoterrorism,' including drug trafficking and money laundering, in March 2020 during the first Trump administration, and the newly released indictment supplements those charges.

The new indictment adds his wife, Flores, his son, and Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, among other family members and close associates, as defendants.

The trial of President Maduro will be presided over by Judge Alvin Hellerstein, who is 92 years old this year.

CNN reported that Judge Hellerstein, appointed by former President Bill Clinton, has been handling this case for over a decade.

Earlier, President Maduro was arrested the previous day in a surprise operation by U.S. forces at a safe house in Venezuela's capital, Caracas, and was extradited to New York via helicopter, the assault carrier USS Iwo Jima, aircraft, and helicopters.

He was subsequently taken into official custody at the New York field office of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and is being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Brooklyn, New York.
