Recommendation to Avoid Processed Foods and Added Sugars

Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., along with White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt, held a press conference on Wednesday the 7th to announce new U.S. dietary guidelines.
According to the new federal nutrition recommendations, Americans should consume more unprocessed, whole foods and protein, and reduce their intake of highly processed foods and added sugars.
The recommended protein intake has approximately doubled to 1.2-1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight, compared to previous recommendations.
Levitt confirmed that the dietary guidelines, which will be implemented from 2025 to 2030, will set the standards for food served in public schools, military bases, and other government-supported institutions.
"As Secretary of Health and Human Services, my message is simple: eat real food," Kennedy stated, lamenting the influence of corporate interests in promoting highly processed foods.
"For the first time, these dietary guidelines address ultra-processed foods," he added.
This announcement is part of a reform of America's food supply chain that Secretary Kennedy has been emphasizing for months as part of his "Make America Healthy Again" initiative.
Rollins stated, "We have been working on these new dietary guidelines almost from day one," adding, "America is facing the worst chronic disease crisis in its history."
"Federal incentives have promoted low-quality, highly processed foods and drug treatments over prevention," Rollins said. "The Trump administration is well aware of these risks."
They are also taking a new stance on "highly processed" foods and refined carbohydrates, urging consumers to "avoid salty or sweet packaged foods, prepared meals, and instant foods such as chips, cookies, and candy."
Regarding saturated fats, they suggest choosing natural foods like meat, full-fat dairy, and avocados, but limiting them to less than 10% of total daily calories. Furthermore, despite previously recommending avoiding butter or lard, the guidelines now state, "Butter or lard may be included as other options."
The new recommendations have been praised by prominent nutrition and medical experts, according to the Associated Press.
The new document is only 10 pages long, providing simple and easy-to-understand guidance, as Kennedy promised. This contrasts with the 1980 guidelines, which were 19 pages, and the 2020 guidelines, which grew to 164 pages.
