The woman who was shot and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on Wednesday after allegedly trying to hit an agent with her vehicle was described as an anti-ICE "warrior" and a member of an activist group that "monitors and resists" federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota.
Renee Nicole Good, 37, who moved to Minneapolis last year, became involved with anti-ICE activists through her 6-year-old son's charter school, the New York Post reported on Thursday, citing local sources. The school prides itself on prioritizing "social justice" and encouraging children to "participate in political and social activism."
A parent named Leesa, whose child also attends Southside Family Charter School, told the Post at a growing memorial gathering at the scene of Good's death on Wednesday, "She was a warrior. She died doing the right thing."
Good and her wife, Rebecca, 40, were raising their child together and sent him to Southside Family Charter School. The school, an academy for kindergarten through 5th grade founded in 1972, states on its website its mission to "cultivate children's critical thinking and problem-solving skills" and to "encourage participation in political and social activism."
According to the New York Post, Good became actively involved in the "ICE Watch" group through her participation in school community activities. This group is a loose coalition of activists dedicated to disrupting ICE operations. Minneapolis is a sanctuary city that protects undocumented immigrants.
Similar coalitions have emerged nationwide, with activists using cell phone apps, whistles, and car horns to alert neighborhoods when ICE is mobilized. ICE Watch activists have sometimes resorted to confrontational tactics, and there have been several instances of them ramming agents with vehicles, the Post reported.
"She was trained to confront ICE agents. It was very thorough training, on what to do and what not to do," Leesa told the New York Post. "It was about listening to commands, knowing your rights, and blowing a whistle if you saw an ICE agent."
Leesa added, "I know she was doing the right thing. I’ve watched the videos multiple times, but in my heart, I’m confident that whatever she did, it was right," she added.
Good died after being shot in the head when she rammed an SUV towards two immigration enforcement officers conducting a raid in the south of the city.
Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said late Wednesday that while the death was a "tragedy," the shooting was justified self-defense.
"Our officer acted as he was trained, and he did exactly what he was supposed to do in that situation," Nielsen said at a press conference in Minneapolis.
Nielsen said Good had been blocking and harassing officers' passage with her vehicle all day and "attempted to hit an officer with her car" before being shot.
"We will allow the FBI to continue to investigate and solve the case," she said, adding that the officer who was hit by the car had been hospitalized and released.
Kristin Peter, 30, a Hennepin County employee who attended the vigil, told the Post that Good was part of the same ICE Watch team as one of her colleagues and was scheduled to attend a team meeting on Thursday night.
"They were on the same team, they ate together," she said, waving a bundle of sage, which Native Americans used in rituals, that she had lit at the vigil.
According to the New York Post, the Good family did not like President Donald Trump and had planned to leave the United States permanently after the 2024 election, moving from their neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri, to Canada.
A former neighbor told KMBC-TV that they lived in Canada for several months before settling in Minneapolis. Renee Good had two children from a previous marriage, but they did not live with her and her wife.
According to the New York Post, Rebecca Good, who was confronting ICE agents outside the SUV at the time of the shooting, was filmed weeping and saying, "It's my fault," after realizing Rene had been hit.
She ran to help her partner and said with a bloodied face, "I’m the reason she’s here. It’s my fault. They shot her in the head. I have a 6-year-old child in school."
