Greenland [Reuters Yonhap News]
U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his desire to acquire Greenland on the 14th (local time), stating that the Danish territory is essential for the United States' next-generation missile defense system, 'Golden Dome'.
President Trump wrote on his Truth Social account that day, "The United States needs Greenland for national security" and "It is essential for the Golden Dome we are building."
This statement comes as the international community is on high alert over President Trump's overt ambition to acquire Greenland, which could potentially shake up NATO's security landscape, and he has once again adhered to a strong stance.
The Golden Dome construction plan, unveiled by President Trump in May last year, is a next-generation U.S. missile defense system similar to Israel's Iron Dome air defense system.
The concept is to launch 400 to 1,000 surveillance and tracking satellites and 200 attack satellites to defend the entire U.S. territory from potential adversaries such as China and Russia.
President Trump said, "NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) must take the lead in allowing us to obtain it," adding, "If we don't, Russia or China will, and that is unacceptable."
He emphasized, "Militarily, without the formidable U.S. military power that I built much of during my first term and am now elevating to a new, higher level, NATO would not be able to exert effective power or deterrence," and "NATO will be stronger and more effective when Greenland is in American hands."
In further posts on Truth Social, President Trump urged NATO, "Tell Denmark immediately to get them (China and Russia) out of here (Greenland)," adding, "Two dog sleds won't cut it. Only the United States can do it."
This emphasizes that the U.S. must be involved to prevent Chinese and Russian intervention due to Greenland's weak defense capabilities.
President Trump then linked an article from the U.S. online publication 'Just the News,' stating, "Danish intelligence warned last year that Russia and China have military objectives aimed at Greenland and the Arctic."
The article introduced content from the 'Intelligence Outlook 2025' report on Denmark's security situation, which stated, "China is preparing to establish a military presence in the Arctic region, and Greenland is included in China's long-term Arctic interests."
The article also reported that Danish intelligence revealed in the report that Chinese and Russian forces are increasingly cooperating in the Arctic, and Russia is deploying submarines, warships, and aircraft near Greenland.
