House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has signaled a potential impeachment of federal judges who have issued rulings unfavorable to the Trump administration.

When asked at a press conference on the 21st (local time) about calls for the impeachment of U.S. District Court Judge James Boasberg of Washington D.C. and U.S. District Court Judge Deborah Boardman of Maryland, Johnson stated his support.

"I'm in favor of it," Johnson said. "Impeachment, as we've discussed many times, is an extreme measure. But extreme circumstances require extreme measures."

Johnson suggested that impeachment could serve as a warning to the federal judiciary, arguing that some judges have overstepped their constitutional roles.

"I think some judges have gone so far outside the bounds of their jurisdiction," he added. "And I don't think it's a bad thing for Congress to set a precedent, to make an example, of these kinds of serious abuses."

Johnson's remarks come as House conservatives renew efforts to impeach judges accused of obstructing President Donald Trump's policies through unfavorable rulings.

While impeachment of federal judges is constitutionally permissible, it has historically been a rare measure reserved for criminal offenses or ethical violations, not simply for disagreeing with judicial decisions.

On Thursday, the 22nd, House Representative Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) stated that momentum is building among Republican House members for such action following Speaker Johnson's endorsement.

"I just spoke to him on the House floor, and he's still in favor of it," Ogles told Fox News Digital. "So, we're going to push forward on at least one of them."

Judge Boasberg drew Republican ire after it was revealed that he authorized the seizure of phone records of some Republican lawmakers in connection with former special counsel Jack Smith's "Artic Frost" investigation.

In March 2025, Boasberg had temporarily halted the Trump administration's use of the Alien Enemies Act to expedite the deportation of suspected gang members to El Salvador.

At the time, a plane was already in the air, and the Trump administration did not order the plane to return. Boasberg then initiated contempt of court proceedings against the administration, which were later fully halted by an appellate court at the request of the Department of Justice.

An impeachment resolution against Boasberg, introduced by House Representative Brandon Gill (R-Texas), gained traction among conservatives last year.

"We're going to do everything that we can to get this bill passed," Gill told Fox News Digital. "It's undeniable that Judge Boasberg has been a partisan actor for Democrats for a long time."

House Representative Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) also told Fox News Digital, "I'm fully in favor of it," and noted that Boasberg is "one of the most egregious judicial activists in the legal community, but that's not why he was appointed to be a judge."

However, not all Republicans support impeaching federal judges. House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris (R-Md.) expressed uncertainty about whether such measures could even pass through committee review before a full House vote.
