U.S. President Donald Trump [Reuters Yonhap News]
U.S. President Donald Trump stated on the 24th (local time) that if Canada enters into an agreement with China, "a 100% tariff will be immediately imposed on all Canadian goods and products entering the United States."
Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, "If Governor Carney thinks he can make Canada a 'Drop Off Port' for China to send goods and products to the United States, he is making a big mistake."
'Governor Carney' refers to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Since the beginning of his second term, Trump has openly expressed his ambition to annex Canada, referring to the Canadian Prime Minister as 'Governor' to imply 'the 51st state of America.'
Trump also warned, "China will completely swallow Canada, including its businesses, social structure, and overall way of life, and eat it alive."
Trump's warning remarks toward Canada come amid Canada's move to strengthen ties with China in response to his tariff policies and threats of hemispheric annexation.
Earlier, Prime Minister Carney visited China from the 14th to the 17th, the first visit by a Canadian Prime Minister in eight years, and held a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
At the meeting, the two leaders declared the normalization of relations after years of conflict, stating they would begin a "new strategic partnership." In particular, China and Canada reached some trade agreements, including tariff reductions on key exports from both countries, such as Chinese electric vehicles and Canadian canola seeds.
