The United States officially withdrew from the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday, January 22, exactly one year after President Donald Trump announced the plan to leave the organization.

The Trump administration stated that the decision was based on the WHO's mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic, its refusal to implement reforms, and political pressure from certain member states.

"This action will end the history of globalism, where American taxpayers have for decades funded an organization marred by incompetence, bias, and failures that have cost countless lives during the COVID-19 pandemic," reported The Gateway Pundit.

Since playing a leading role in the WHO's founding in 1948, the United States has been one of its most influential member states. It was also its largest financial contributor.

In a WHO without the United States, the largest donors are now Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, supported by Bill Gates and other organizations providing vaccines to low-income countries, followed by the European Commission, ranking first, second, and third respectively.

Secretary Robert F. Kennedy announced that federal funding for Gavi would be halted. Meanwhile, the scale of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) international health programs has been reduced due to workforce cuts.

An attempt to withdraw from the WHO was made during the Trump administration in 2020, but the Biden administration reversed this decision.

"The American people have paid enough," a State Department spokesperson said in an email to Reuters on Thursday morning.

According to Reuters, the American flag that was flying outside the WHO headquarters in Geneva has been removed.
