U.S. President Donald Trump continued his criticism of Canada on the 25th (local time), posting another warning on Truth Social about a deal between Ottawa and Beijing.
"China is successfully completely taking over Canada, which was once great," Trump wrote. "It's so sad to see this happening. I hope they don't touch ice hockey!"
The remarks followed criticism from the previous day regarding Canada and China signing a preliminary trade agreement to eliminate tariffs and expand market access.
Previously, Canada and China reached a preliminary agreement in principle known as the 'Canada-China Economic and Trade Cooperation Roadmap'.
This included Canada importing 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles annually and setting the tariff rate at 6.1%. The tariff rate for automobiles in 2024 was 100%.
Additionally, in the agricultural sector, China reduced or abolished tariffs on several goods, including a significant reduction in retaliatory tariffs on Canadian products. Notably, China also pledged to introduce visa exemptions for Chinese travel for Canadians.
"The last thing the world wants is for China to take over Canada," President Trump said in a post on the 24th (Saturday). "It's not going to happen, not a chance!"
In a separate social media post on Saturday, President Trump threatened to impose a 100% tariff on Canadian imports if the Ottawa government pursued a trade deal with China.
"If Prime Minister Trudeau thinks Canada will be a 'Drop Off Port' for China to bring products into the U.S., he is very wrong," the President warned. "China will completely swallow Canada, destroying their businesses, social structure, and overall way of life. If Canada enters into an agreement with China, a 100% tariff will immediately be imposed on all Canadian goods and products entering the United States."
