President Donald Trump signed a budget bill on Tuesday that ends a partial government shutdown after action in Congress had been delayed by disputes over immigration enforcement.

The bill, which passed the House by a 217-214 vote, provides 10 days of short-term funding for the Department of Homeland Security, setting a new deadline of February 13.

The stopgap measure comes as Democrats continue to push for restrictions on the activities of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Trump signed the bill in the Oval Office, with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and other Senate and House Republicans looking on. The president praised the lawmakers for quickly processing the bill and preventing a halt in government services.

In addition to the Department of Homeland Security's budget, the measure extends funding through September 30 for several federal departments and agencies, including those for Energy, Defense, Treasury, State, Labor, Transportation, Health and Human Services, and Education.

It also provides funding for the judiciary and various independent agencies.

The bill passed the House after tense negotiations, as a small number of Republican lawmakers initially withheld their support.

Leaders from both parties worked to secure the necessary votes before the bill could pass Congress and be sent to the White House.

The stopgap funding measure is expected to trigger another budget showdown in February, as lawmakers continue their debates over immigration enforcement and broader government spending priorities.
