On the 4th (local time), the U.S. Supreme Court allowed California to use a new electoral map that could secure an additional five seats in the House of Representatives for the Democratic Party.

This increases the possibility of regaining the majority in the House from the Republican Party, led by President Donald Trump, in the November midterm elections, Reuters reported.

The justices rejected a request from the California Republican Party to block the change in California's electoral map. Previously, in December last year, the Supreme Court had allowed Texas to use a newly drawn electoral map for this year's elections.

Texas's new electoral map could shift up to five House seats currently held by Democrats to the Republican Party.

California voters approved a ballot measure in November allowing the state legislature to adopt the new map.

California, the most populous state in the U.S., has 52 seats in the House of Representatives, while Texas, the second most populous state, has 38 seats.

In its ruling, the Supreme Court issued only a one-sentence order without any explanation, indicating that no justices dissented.

The California Republican Party and other objectors argued that the state government illegally used race in the redistricting process for the House of Representatives.

They claimed that the changes were made to favor Latino voters, which they argued violates the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment, the prohibition of racial discrimination in voting in the 15th Amendment, and the federal Voting Rights Act.

However, the Supreme Court's ruling indicates that the new electoral map is recognized as being based on political motivations rather than racial reasons.
