Mos Tanh, former international criminal justice envoy, stated in an interview with News & Post on the 6th (local time) that the Coupang issue should be viewed within the larger context of China's "scorched-earth warfare" against Korea.

Ambassador Tanh pointed out that the Lee Jae-myung administration's actions against Coupang were of an unprecedented scale.

He criticized the Lee Jae-myung administration for lying to the United States, hoping the U.S. government would remain unaware of the facts, while telling a completely different story to the Korean mainstream media, amplifying their falsehoods.

He noted that the Korean government had done the same to President Trump. He stated that lying to the U.S. government never ends well, and that Korea is the only country that has recently had its tariffs raised again by the U.S.

Ambassador Tanh said the Lee Jae-myung administration is ruining the good alliance that has been maintained between the people of the U.S. and Korea.

He claimed that the personal information leak incident stemmed from "all of this is fundamentally a false claim originating from a regime that is inherently deceitful and practices lies, attempting to replace Coupang with Chinese companies like Temu or Alipay and drive Coupang out."

Ambassador Tanh pointed out that there have been about ten government-level attacks on Coupang, encompassing issues related to data security, taxes, labor, and trade, calling it "an unprecedented attack on an American company."

"If you think that a businessman like Donald Trump wouldn't care about attacks on American companies, and multiple American companies at that, then I think the government will eventually realize how far they have crossed the line and what consequences will follow," he added.

Ambassador Tanh stated, "Fortunately," the U.S. government and Congress are becoming more aware of the reality of the Korean regime.

Former Ambassador Tanh emphasized, "There is still an opportunity for the Korean government," and that if the Korean government stops its wrongful accusations and discriminatory treatment of Coupang now, the Korea-U.S. relationship and trade negotiations can return to normal.

He expressed strong concern that if this situation is not resolved, it will not only cause significant damage to the alliance between Korea and the U.S. but also negatively impact the international community as Korea, a top 10 trading nation, is shaken.

Meanwhile, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee issued a subpoena to Coupang on the 5th as part of its investigation into alleged discrimination against American companies. Reuters reported that this is a move to secure communications between the e-commerce company and the Korean government.

The committee also requested Coupang to testify before Congress.

In a letter to Coupang executives on Thursday, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (Republican, Wisconsin) stated that the investigation will examine whether foreign laws and enforcement actions are being used to target American companies and weaken their global competitiveness.

According to Reuters, Chairman Jordan said in a statement that Korea's "sharp escalation of tensions" is in direct conflict with President Donald Trump's trade agreement with Korea, which pledged that Korea would "avoid discriminatory treatment and not create unnecessary barriers for American digital service providers."

In a statement, Coupang said, "We will fully cooperate with the investigation by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee and will submit the required documents and provide witness testimony in response to the subpoena."

According to Fox News, lawmakers stated that the committee is conducting oversight into "how and to what extent foreign laws, regulations, and judicial orders are being used to discriminate against innovative American companies and infringe upon the rights of American citizens."

The committee raised concerns that the Korea Fair Trade Commission and other relevant agencies could impose "punitive obligations, excessive fines, and discriminatory enforcement practices" on U.S. companies, favoring domestic competitors.

According to the letter, the investigation is intended to inform potential legislative efforts to protect American companies and citizens from what Congress defines as 'discriminatory foreign regulations and enforcement decisions.'

The committee stated that obtaining records from Coupang will help lawmakers, as part of their oversight responsibilities, assess how foreign policies and enforcement practices may affect the due process rights of Americans and the global market competitiveness of U.S. companies.

Chairman Jordan shared a Fox News article on X, stating, "Congress is targeting the issue of 'discriminatory' treatment by South Korean regulators against American tech companies."
