How was the 'Far-Right' Created? — The Origins of Frame Politics and the Complicity of Moderate Hypocrisy
The impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol was not a simple transfer of power. It was the culmination of a cultural and institutional elimination scenario targeting the entire conservative camp, which had been accumulating since 2020. The Lee Jae-myung administration, immediately upon its inauguration, declared a "severance from far-right forces" towards the public square, YouTube, churches, and civic groups, and institutionalized it. However, all of this was justified through the language of the 'far-right'.
The problem is that even within the conservative ranks, the frame was accepted and utilized. Former Mayor Oh Se-hoon stated in May 2025, "Seoul's dignity will be enhanced by breaking away from the far-right image," and former lawmaker Yoo Seong-min emphasized, "Conservatism can survive by parting ways with extremism." Former lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo, at a meeting of 'Rational Moderate Right-wingers' shortly after the impeachment, effectively pointed to Jeon Kwang-hoon, Min Kyung-wook, and Hwang Kyo-ahn, stating, "The rhetoric and falsehoods of the far-right are enemies of unity." Former Minister Han Dong-hoon went further, saying, "The anti-intellectualism of the public square is irrelevant to conservatism."
Who were the targets of their attacks? They included former lawmaker Min Kyung-wook, who tracked anomalies in election data from 2020 to 2025; former Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, who advocated for the protection of constitutional values; Pastor Jeon Kwang-hoon, who prayed in public squares and reported election rigging; lawyer Park Ju-hyun, who promoted citizen observer systems; and CEO Shin Hye-sik, who spread evidence of election deficiencies through YouTube. They were not purveyors of fake news, but individuals who sought to monitor elections and protect the foundations of democracy.
The reason they were branded as 'far-right' is singular: they brought uncomfortable truths to light for those in power. A frame is not an ideology but a language of political convenience. In fact, the advance voting statistics presented by Min Kyung-wook remain an "unrefuted question" among some scholars of the Korean Statistical Society. The seal tampering and classification errors raised by Park Ju-hyun have been partially acknowledged by the National Election Commission.
Despite this, their claims were not verified, and even conservative media outlets turned their backs. Chosun Ilbo categorically stated in 2020 that "claims of fraudulent elections are absurd" and in 2025 published a column titled "Yoon Suk-yeol is the leader of the far-right."
Now we ask: Who is the 'Far-Right'?
Is it the citizens who rally with the conviction to protect the nation?
Is it the politicians who question the legitimacy of elections?
Is it the pastor who prayed in the public square?
There is no real far-right. There is only power that fears the truth.
