U.S. President Donald Trump warned Republican lawmakers on Tuesday (local time) that they would face "serious consequences" in elections if they voted to repeal his tariff policies.

"Any Republican who opposes tariffs, whether in the House or the Senate, will face severe consequences at election time, and that includes the primaries!" Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Our trade deficit has been cut by 78%, the Dow Jones just broke 50,000, and the S&P is at 7,000. These are all things that were considered impossible just one year ago.

"Furthermore, tariffs have been a great help to National Security, because other countries will accept our strong demands just by mentioning the word. Tariffs have brought economic security and national security together. No Republican should be responsible for destroying this privilege."

Almost simultaneously with President Trump's post, six Republican House members joined Democrats in passing a resolution introduced by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Gregory Meeks of New York. The measure would end the national emergency declared by President Trump via an executive order in February 2025, which imposed tariffs on Canada.

House Democrats have been using procedural tools to force additional votes in the coming weeks, including on the president's tariffs on Mexico and so-called "Juneteenth" tariffs on dozens of other trading partners, according to CNN.

The six Republicans who voted with Democrats to repeal the Canada tariffs are Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Don Bacon of Nebraska, Kevin Kiley of California, Jeff Hurd of Colorado, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, and Dan Newhouse of Washington. Only one Democrat, Rep. Jared Golden of Maine, voted against the bill.

Bacon suggested Wednesday morning that as many as 30 Republicans might join the effort to block the tariffs, CNN reported. The final number was far fewer than many Republicans had anticipated.

When asked by CNN about President Trump's message, Newhouse said, "Well, I have to do what's best for my constituents. And the President understands that."

The Senate passed a similar bill to cancel President Trump's tariffs on Canada in April, which passed with a simple majority rather than the 60 votes needed. Four Republicans joined Democrats in approving that resolution: Sens. Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

However, even if the Senate passes the House bill, President Trump can still veto it, and neither chamber appears to have secured the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto, Newsmax reported.
