Violent crime has significantly decreased across major U.S. cities in 2025, according to new data from the Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA), Axios reported on Wednesday, the 11th.
If this remarkable decline observed in major cities is reflected in future national figures, "the U.S. homicide rate in 2025 will be the lowest since at least 1900," the Committee on Criminal Justice stated.
This report comes as an achievement in President Donald Trump's first year back in office and is expected to be a favorable factor for Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections. President Trump shared the article on Truth Social.
However, left-wing media outlets are appearing to deliberately deny that the Trump administration's pro-law enforcement policies were the direct cause of the crime rate decrease.
According to Axios, experts suggest that the reduction in homicides, which surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, is the result of a combination of technological and social factors.
The New York Times reported that the study findings are attributed to long-term trends, including not only policing strategies and incarceration rates but also advancements in mental health treatment, gun control, beautification of vacant lots, and the phased removal of lead from gasoline, which hinders brain development since the 1970s.
Axios even reported that "improvements in life-saving medical care have also contributed to the reduction in homicide rates."
According to the MCCA report, homicides decreased by 19% across all major cities. Robberies fell by approximately 20%, and aggravated assaults decreased by nearly 10%.
Orlando and Tampa saw the highest decrease nationwide, with a staggering 58.3% drop in homicides. Western cities such as Denver (47.1%), Seattle (36.2%), and Honolulu (34.5%) also experienced significant declines in homicides.
Chicago and Baltimore both saw homicides decrease by about 30% last year, and Memphis and Portland both showed a reduction of around 25%. These cities were heavily impacted by surges in crime during the height of the "Black Lives Matter" protests.
Since taking office in January 2025, President Trump has prioritized the restoration of "law and order" as one of his key objectives, implementing policies such as: ▲ Strengthening public safety in Washington D.C. (declaring a crime emergency) ▲ Expanding and supporting law enforcement agencies (executive order on strengthening law enforcement and tracking criminals) ▲ Cracking down on and deporting foreign nationals involved in crime ▲ Eradicating street disorder (prioritizing federal grants to states and cities cracking down on homeless encampments, public drug use, and unauthorized occupations) ▲ Reviving and strengthening the death penalty ▲ Pursuing comprehensive crime legislation (including increased penalties for assaulting police officers and enhanced sentencing).
