Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan announced on the 17th (local time) that a man was arrested for allegedly running hundreds of yards towards the U.S. Capitol building in Washington D.C. while in possession of a shotgun.

The incident occurred around noon near the west front of the Capitol Building. As Congress was not in session at the time, most lawmakers were not present on Capitol grounds.

Sullivan stated that the 18-year-old man, who is not a resident of the Washington D.C. area, exited a white Mercedes SUV and ran towards the Capitol. According to CBS News, the man, whose identity has not been released, was approaching from the direction of the National Mall.

In a press conference, Sullivan said, "This individual complied with the commands of Capitol Police officers and dropped his weapon. He dropped the weapon, got on the ground, and was taken into custody by Capitol Police officers."

The Police Chief stated that the suspect was wearing a tactical vest and gloves, and the firearm was loaded with live ammunition. He also had additional ammunition on his person.

A search of the vehicle revealed a Kevlar helmet and a gas mask inside the suspect's car.

Sullivan added that the motive for the incident is still unknown and that the investigation is ongoing.

Security had been heightened as Congress was scheduled to hold President Donald Trump's State of the Union address in a week, on February 24th.
