Democrats are exploring various ways to publicly express their opposition to U.S. President Donald Trump during his State of the Union address next week, Newsmax reported on February 18 (local time).

The Democratic Party is considering boycotts, walkouts, and counter-rallies as President Trump prepares to deliver his second State of the Union address on the evening of February 24. Last March, Democratic lawmakers drew criticism for their actions during President Trump's address to a joint session of Congress, which included holding protest signs and loudly departing the chamber.

This speech has become a political flashpoint amid the government shutdown over homeland security funding. The White House and Democrats are at an impasse over reforms to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), as well as the SAVE America Act, which would require citizenship for voter registration and voting.

According to Axios, some Democrats plan to skip the event entirely, while others have indicated they may leave during the speech as a form of protest.

In an interview with Axios, Representative Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) stated, "The only question left for me is, at what point in his disgusting remarks will I stand up and walk out? I will certainly do so at some point."

In an interview with The Hill, Representative Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) strongly condemned President Trump's "massive corruption" and "deplorable actions on Epstein's island," stating he is "considering" some form of protest.

While there is no basis for the claims of immoral behavior by President Trump on Epstein's island, Democrats are unwilling to back down from these allegations.

Other Democratic lawmakers are taking a more calculated approach, intentionally inviting guests to highlight their policy concerns.

Representative Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) plans to bring a local constituent who runs a nonprofit daycare and advocates for Obamacare, stating she wants to emphasize "affordable childcare and healthcare for all."

It is a tradition for federal lawmakers to invite constituents to the State of the Union address, using the occasion to send political signals to their districts.

The New York Times reported that Democrats are working to avoid a repeat of the incident last year when Representative Al Green (D-Texas) was ejected after waving his cane and shouting during President Trump's speech. Green was later censured by the House.

The New York Times also noted that Democrats were mocked for waving paddles with slogans such as "Save Medicaid" and "False." Party leadership determined that these actions detracted from their message.

A significant number of Democrats this year plan to boycott the speech and attend an alternative rally called "People's State of the Union," organized by MoveOn and the progressive media outlet MeidasTouch.

Democratic lawmakers and progressive commentators Joy Reid and Katie Phang are expected to participate in this event.

Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) told The New York Times that Trump "does not deserve an audience" and claimed he would deliver "40 different lies" and attempt to "cover up his corruption" through his speech.

However, even some Democrats are warning that such exaggerated actions could backfire.

According to Axios, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) urged lawmakers in a closed-door meeting to attend and "resist in silence" or skip the speech.

A moderate Democrat told Axios that last year's disruptions "completely backfired" and "made us look like children."
