TSA PreCheck lane at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago [AP/Yonhap News]
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reversed its decision to temporarily suspend airport expedited screening programs, including TSA PreCheck, due to a government shutdown, just one day after the announcement, following backlash from the industry.
In a statement released on the 22nd (local time), the DHS announced that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) PreCheck program, an expedited screening program, is operating normally.
TSA PreCheck is a program that allows pre-screened travelers to pass through airport security checkpoints more quickly in the United States. Currently, over 20 million people are enrolled in the program.
The DHS had previously announced that the TSA PreCheck program would be temporarily suspended starting at 6 a.m. on that day due to emergency personnel reallocation caused by the shutdown, but faced strong opposition from the aviation and travel industries.
However, the "Global Entry" program, which expedites customs and immigration inspections, remains suspended as previously announced. Escort services for members of Congress were also kept on the suspension list.
The DHS stated, "If personnel constraints arise, the TSA will evaluate each case individually and adjust operations accordingly."
Previously, the U.S. Congress failed to pass the budget for the Department of Homeland Security, the responsible agency, within the deadline due to disagreements over the Trump administration's immigration enforcement policies. As a result, the DHS entered a shutdown at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on the 14th.
