President Donald Trump on Monday dismissed as fake news media reports that General Daniel "Razin" Caine, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, opposed a U.S. military action against Iran. He stated the reports were "100% false."
In a Truth Social post, Trump refuted reports by Axios, which claimed that Caine had warned administration officials about the risks of a protracted conflict if the United States attacked Iran's nuclear facilities.
Trump pointed out, "There are many fake news articles out there saying that General Daniel Caine is against going into war with Iran."
"The story is 100% false, and they don't give credit to anyone for this vast knowledge," he wrote.
Axios reported that Caine expressed a cautious stance in internal discussions, raising concerns about escalation, potential American casualties, and prolonged engagement.
The Washington Post reported that Caine had voiced concerns about ammunition shortages and limited support from allies, while the Wall Street Journal stated that war department officials had warned about risks including potential U.S. and allied casualties and the depletion of air defense systems.
Trump rebutted the assertion that his top military advisor opposed action.
"General Caine does not want war, just like all of us, but if military action is to be taken against Iran, he believes it can be easily won," Trump wrote.
Trump referred to Caine as "the man who led the 'Midnight Hammer' operation to attack the Iran nuclear facilities, he knows Iran better than anyone," adding, "The Iran nuclear facilities are no longer there, they were completely destroyed in our B-2 bombing runs."
"General Razin Caine is an outstanding combat commander, representing our military strength better than anyone in the world," he praised, and wrote, "He has never opposed an attack on Iran, or a fake limited attack, as I have been reading." He reiterated that the reported content was untrue.
Trump stated, "He knows only victory, and will lead the charge if so ordered," and emphasized, "Everything written about the possibility of war with Iran is intentionally wrong."
The reports and Trump's rebuttal come as the president considers various options regarding Iran amid stalled nuclear negotiations and a significant U.S. military buildup in the Middle East.
According to Axios, Caine was the only military leader to brief Trump in recent weeks, indicating his pivotal role in the discussions.
However, Trump made it clear that the ultimate decision rests with him.
"The final decision maker is me. I hope we can make a deal, but if we cannot, it will be a tragic day for Iran and its people," Trump warned.
He added, "They are a great and wonderful people, and this should never happen."
