The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is considering imposing new national security tariffs on six industry sectors following a Supreme Court ruling last week that invalidated many tariffs imposed during his second term, The Wall Street Journal reported on the 23rd (local time).

The new tariffs, which would be imposed under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, are separate from the 15% global tariffs announced by President Trump on the 21st, the report said, citing sources familiar with the plan. The tariffs announced on Saturday were based on Article 122.

Last week, the Supreme Court ruled that the broad tariff imposition measures pursued by President Trump were unconstitutional, based on a law designed to be used only in times of national emergency.

Legal scholars interpret this ruling as meaning that the authority to impose taxes fundamentally rests with Congress, and the executive branch can exercise limited authority.

However, three Supreme Court justices dissented, suggesting that the president's authority to impose tariffs is possible in some form.

In response, President Trump imposed a temporary 10% tariff on all imports from all countries, which he later raised to 15%.

The new taxes could cover industries such as large batteries, cast iron and iron components, plastic pipes, industrial chemicals, power grids, and telecommunications equipment, The Wall Street Journal added.
