Jamieson Greer, the United States Trade Representative (USTR), stated in an interview with Fox Business on Wednesday morning (25th) that tariff rates for certain countries could rise to 15% or higher as President Trump continues his efforts to expand U.S. economic influence.

Appearing on the "Mornings with Maria" program, Ambassador Greer said, "We already have 10% tariffs in place, but for some items, that will go up to 15%, and for others, it could go even higher."

He added, "I think this will be consistent with the types of tariffs we have seen thus far. We are trying to maintain continuity with the program we have been running over the past year... We are continuing existing programs as much as possible to avoid disruptions."

These remarks come as U.S. trade partners are demanding explanations regarding how the administration plans to implement its revised tariff strategy following a recent ruling by the Supreme Court declaring previous actions unconstitutional.

Ambassador Greer stated that the administration is preparing to launch a series of investigations under existing trade authorities in the coming days or weeks, including Section 301 investigations targeting "unfair trade practices."

In an interview with Bloomberg, he said, "We will conduct these investigations country by country under Section 301 to identify the problems they have caused. Not only can we negotiate with those countries, but we can also impose tariffs to compel them to eradicate such practices."

Greer explained, "This includes cases such as those utilizing forced labor in supply chains," and added that the U.S. will also investigate countries accused of building industrial overcapacity and dumping products into the U.S. market.

This is interpreted as targeting China and certain Southeast Asian nations.

Fox News reported that he mentioned these procedures would involve the USTR issuing notices in the Federal Register, opening public comment periods, and holding hearings, ensuring each country has the opportunity to address concerns before any additional tariffs are imposed.

"For instance, in the case of Indonesia, we will conduct an investigation," he said. "We will look at industrial overcapacity, fishing activities, and the like. Based on these investigations, we will compare what Indonesia has agreed to with the issues we have identified. We will then decide what tariffs to apply."
