The most polarizing moment of President Donald Trump's State of the Union address on Tuesday came when he called Democrats "crazy" for their stance on prohibiting gender transitions for minors.

According to Fox News, a voter panel assembled by pollster Maslansky + Partners showed a sharp division at that moment. The panel consisted of 29 Democrats, 30 independents, and 40 Republicans, whose real-time reactions were displayed with colored lines.

"But surely we can all agree that no state, no city, no school should be allowed to steal the childhood of any child, and force them to transition to a gender of a different sex against their parents' wishes," Trump said. "Who would believe that?... We must ban this immediately."

As Trump spoke, Republican support, shown in red, surged into positive territory. Independent support, shown in yellow, also trended upward, while Democratic support, shown in blue, declined.

The remarks were met with a standing ovation from Republicans in Congress, but the president became incensed when Democrats did not join in.

"Look at that, not one person is standing," Trump said, pointing at Democratic senators and representatives with his finger. "These people are crazy. I’m telling you, they’re crazy."

Republican supporters' reactions remained high throughout the remarks, while Democratic supporters' reactions were negative, and independent voters' reactions were relatively stable.

President Trump made the remarks while calling to the stand a teenage girl from Virginia, Sage Blair. Blair's family filed a lawsuit in 2023 against Appomattox County school staff, alleging they forced their daughter's gender transition without parental consent.

According to the lawsuit filed by the family, Blair began to be identified as male at school, and school staff used male names and pronouns for her and allowed her to use male-only facilities without informing her parents.

The family claims that the situation escalated after Blair ran away from home and subsequently became a victim of sex trafficking, alleging in the lawsuit that she was kidnapped and raped in multiple states.

President Trump highlighted the case in his speech, stating that school officials tried to transition Blair to a "new gender" when she was 14 years old and treated her as a boy, hiding it from her parents.

Republicans in Congress gave a standing ovation as President Trump said, "But today, all of that is in the past. Sage is a proud, wonderful young woman who is attending Liberty University on a full scholarship. Sage, and Michelle, please stand up."

"Thank you for your brave actions," Trump added.

One of the most heated reactions from the panel discussion revolved around discussions of gender-affirming care policies.

Among supporters, comments focused on child protection and parental involvement, such as "children must be protected" and "parents must be informed," according to Fox News.

Opponents offered opinions such as "every case is unique" and "an outright ban is not advisable."
