The FBI has launched an investigation into a possible act of terrorism after a man wearing clothing depicting the Iranian flag went on a shooting spree at a bar in a nightlife district in Austin, Texas, a day after the death of Iran's supreme leader in a joint US-Israeli military operation, AP and AFP reported on the 1st (local time).

According to police, a shooting incident occurred at a bar on 6th Street, a nightlife area in Austin, Texas, around 2 a.m. on the 1st, resulting in two deaths and 14 injuries. Three of the injured are in critical condition.

The suspect drove a sport utility vehicle (SUV) back and forth in front of the bar several times before stopping the car and firing a handgun from the window at people on the terrace and in front of the bar.

He then parked the vehicle, got out with a rifle, and began shooting at nearby pedestrians.

Police officers, who were fortunately deployed nearby, confronted the suspect within one minute of the incident and fatally shot him at the scene.

The suspect has been identified as Ndiaga Diane, 53, a Senegalese national who immigrated to the United States in 2006 and obtained citizenship, AP reported, citing sources.

He was reportedly wearing a tracksuit top with "Property of Allah" written on it and a shirt with an Iranian flag design at the time of the crime.

SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors Islamic extremist groups, stated that the suspect had previously expressed support for the Iranian regime and hatred towards US and Israeli leaders on Facebook, and had also posted photos of himself with a weapon that appeared to be an assault rifle.

Alex Doran, acting special agent in charge of the FBI's San Antonio Field Office, said, "Based on the circumstances found with the shooter and the vehicle, we are investigating whether this was an act of terrorism," adding, "However, it is too early to draw a conclusion."

Doran added, "Regarding the specific type of terrorism, at this point, we can only say that there is a possibility of it being an act of terrorism."

Chip Roy, a U.S. Representative for Texas (Republican), criticized the incident by posting a photo, believed to be of the shooting suspect, wearing a tracksuit with "Property of Allah" written on it, on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating, "Do not tell me how 'great' legal immigration is. It is literally killing us."

Jim Davis, President of the University of Texas at Austin, stated that some of the victims were members of the university community, and expressed his prayers "for the victims and all those affected."

There have been at least two major shooting incidents on 6th Street in Austin over the past five years, including a shooting in 2021 that injured 14 people.

Meanwhile, a shooting incident at a nightclub in Cincinnati, Ohio, early on the same day resulted in nine injuries, none of which were life-threatening.
