President Trump announced the dismissal of Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem as part of his first cabinet reshuffle in his second term.

The New York Post reported that Trump made this announcement in a fit of rage after testifying this week that he had approved a $220 million advertising campaign featuring former South Dakota Governor Noem.

Secretary Noem had been criticized for labeling two protesters (nurse Alex Prettie and 30-something housewife Renee Nicole Good), who were shot and killed by federal agents in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as domestic terrorists.

House Democrats united to introduce articles of impeachment against Secretary Noem in mid-January, with 187 members agreeing as of February 4.

Furthermore, Republican Senators Tom Tillis (North Carolina) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) have also called for Secretary Noem's resignation.

Some staff members in the Trump administration began discussing ways to "recalibrate" the approach to undocumented immigrant enforcement and dispatched Tom Homan to Minnesota to de-escalate the heated situation. Homan significantly reduced the number of federal agents and secured commitments of support from local governments.

Subsequently, the Senate failed to pass the budget for the Department of Homeland Security during the budget agreement process, leading to a current government shutdown.

However, President Trump praised Kristi Noem in a Truth Social post, stating, "Our current Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, has served us magnificently, with countless stellar achievements, particularly on the border."

He added, "She will be moving to serve as Special Envoy for the Western Hemisphere Security Initiative, 'The Shield of the Americas,' to be announced on Saturday in Doral, Florida. Thank you, Kristi, for your tremendous work at the Department of Homeland Security."

President Trump announced, "I am pleased to announce that the respected Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin will be sworn in as the new Secretary of Homeland Security on March 31, 2026."

He stated that he had won all 77 counties in Oklahoma in the 2016, 2020, and 2024 elections, implying that Mullin's appointment to Secretary would not jeopardize the Republican majority in the Senate even if a special election were to be held.

Regarding Senator Markwayne Mullin, who served 10 years in the House of Representatives and three years in the Senate representing Oklahoma, President Trump introduced him by saying, "Markwayne, a MAGA warrior and undefeated former professional MMA fighter, is a man who truly connects with people and possesses the wisdom and courage needed to advance America First. As the only Native American in the Senate, Markwayne is a tremendous advocate for our tribal communities."

He continued, "Markwayne will work tirelessly to secure our borders, stop criminal illegal aliens and murderers from entering our country, eradicate the scourge of illegal drugs, and make America safe again. Markwayne will be a tremendous Secretary of Homeland Security."
