South Carolina State Representative Gilda Cobb-Hunter (Democrat) is facing backlash after calling the group "Moms for Liberty" a "terrorist organization" on the state House floor.

In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), Cobb-Hunter stated, "Moms for Liberty? Oh please! They are a terrorist organization."

Cobb-Hunter was interrupted by Republican State Representative April Cromer, who called for order on a point of personal privilege.

The Speaker of the House told Cobb-Hunter, "You have been here too long."

Cobb-Hunter retorted, "Mr. Speaker, I would like to say what I just said has been widely published and used in various publications and by various entities."

According to JustTheNews, in 2023, the Southern Poverty Law Center designated "Moms for Liberty," a parental rights group, as an "anti-government extremist" organization.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, headquartered in Montgomery, Alabama, is most widely known for its work tracking hate and extremist groups, and for its landmark legal victories against white supremacist organizations.

While the organization has monitored and exposed the activities of domestic hate groups and far-right extremists, including the KKK, Neo-Nazis, and anti-government militias, it has been criticized for being politically motivated under the Biden administration, incorporating many mainstream conservative groups into its designation of extremist hate groups.

The FBI officially severed ties with the Center in October 2025, citing the group's "hate map" designation as a superficial reason. This map has since been cited as a motivator for violent attacks by extremists against conservative individuals and groups.

"Moms for Liberty" condemned Cobb-Hunter's remarks on social media on Wednesday, stating, "Yesterday, on the 6-month anniversary of the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a South Carolina State Representative declared on the State House floor that 'Moms for Liberty are a terrorist organization.'"

They added, "Such dangerous words and rhetoric lead to people being killed. We are warriors of joy fighting for parental rights and to protect children. Moms for Liberty urges the South Carolina Democratic leadership to condemn her words so this never happens again."
