U.S. President Donald Trump stated that while Democrats want a deal on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) budget, he believes no agreement should be reached "until they approve the Voter Eligibility Protection Act, also known as the 'Save America Act'."
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on the 22nd (local time), NewsNation's Washington correspondent, Hannah Brandt, revealed that she asked President Trump during a phone call, "How long do you plan to station ICE agents at airports?"
Brandt's question came after President Trump announced over the weekend that if Democrats did not agree to the DHS budget, he would deploy ICE agents to airports to perform "security duties" and apprehend illegal immigrants.
"During a phone call just now, President Trump said he thinks Democrats want a deal on the DHS budget, but no deal should be made until they approve the 'Save America' Act," Brandt wrote.
"I first asked him how long he was willing to have ICE agents assist at airports. He replied, 'As long as it takes'," Brandt added.
Brandt also mentioned that some lawmakers had suggested providing a budget to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) while the DHS budget remained unresolved. Trump remarked that once he proposed deploying ICE agents to airports, "Democrats now want a deal."
"I don't think we should have any negotiations until they approve the 'Save America' Act," Trump told Brandt.
In a post on Truth Social, approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes after Brandt's X post, President Trump stated, "We should not make any deals with the radical left Democrats who are destroying our country, unless they pass the Save America Act."
"I don't think we should make any deals with the radical left Democrats who are destroying our country unless they vote with the Republicans to pass the 'Save America Act'," Trump wrote.
He emphasized, "This bill is much more important than anything else we are doing in the Senate, and it includes a $5 billion cut to ICE funding for the Democrats who are the cause of this horrible situation. Even if packaged under other pretenses, this is an unacceptable deal for me and the American people." He continued, "Unless they agree to voter ID (with photos!), citizenship recognition for voting purposes, prohibition of mail-in voting (with exceptions), all ballots to be paper, prohibition of men participating in women's sports, and ending transgender sterilizations for our precious children, we should not negotiate with them on anything."
